Swedish Modernism

The Brücke-Museum presents the first comprehensive exhibition on Swedish modernism in Germany. Celebrated as ‘Swedish Expressionists’ at the Berliner Sturm gallery in 1915, the paintings and drawings of artists such as Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald are known to only a few in Germany today. The exhibition aims to change this.

The focus is on the artist groups De unga (The Young Ones) and De åtta (The Eight), as well as the Gothenburg Colourists. Swedish Modernism aims to illustrate the common aspirations of the groups as well as to explore the diverse and independent artistic developments of the participating artists. Sigrid Hjertén is particularly worth discovering. In her vibrantly coloured paintings, she depicts life as a modern woman, artist, intellectual, and mother in all its complex facets.

The exhibiton is a collaboration with the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Following the 2024 exhibition in Stockholm, which featured key works from the Brücke-Museum’s collection for the first time, the second part of the collection exchange is now taking place: all the works in the exhibition come from the Moderna Museet’s collection, most of which are on display in Germany for the first time.

Swedish Modernism is held under the patronage of Her Excellency Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Swedish Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.
